The Trouble with Unity

NYU professor Cristina Beltrán's page for occasional updates

  • Brenna McBride of Haverford College's magazine traveled to New York a couple of months ago to interview me about my teaching and The Trouble with Unity, and the article went live on the college website today; check it out here. Like other faculty profiles, it's a mix of biography, current research interests, and teaching stories. Strangely, the accompanying photo has me in front of another Haverford professor's chalkboard notes, giving the impression that I teach not only political theory but physics. Now that's interdisciplinary!Cristina teaches!

  • Just got my copy of the December 2010 issue of Political Theory: An International Journal of Political Philosophy, with Public Achievement founder Harry Boyte's article "A Commonwealth of Freedom: Response to Beltrán," following up on my October 2009 article "Going Public: Hannah Arendt, Immigrant Action and the Space of Appearance." Political Theory gave me the chance to respond, so Boyte's essay is followed by "Everyday Acts of Greatness: Reply to Boyte." Political Theory, December 2010

  • Upcoming talks scheduled at the University of Washington and UC Santa Cruz, and two roundtables at the Western Political Science Association annual meeting. Details on the Upcoming Appearances page. Merrill College at UCSC, home of the Politics Department

  • The first copies of The Trouble with Unity arrived at the Oxford University Press warehouse nearly six weeks ago, people have been able to buy the book via Amazon for a month or so, and as of last Thursday it's finally available on Barnes & Noble's site. And today is a milestone of sorts: It's the book's official publication date! Guess it's finally OK to begin thinking about book parties.

  • Not sure how Google Books works, but Trouble now appears to be scanned in and searchable, meaning, I suspect, that the book will show up more readily in Google searches. Seems like a good thing.

  • Amazon has The Trouble with Unity at #5 on its list of Hot New Releases in Discrimination & Racism, which compiles "bestselling new & future releases" in that category. The list is updated hourly, so who knows where the book will go from here!

  • Amazon just added its LOOK INSIDE! feature to the listing for The Trouble with Unity, so if you'd like to sneak a peek-a-loo, here's your chance!

Note that both Amazon and Oxford University Press list the book as "in stock," but IndieBound and Barnes & Noble still show publication date as sometime next month. And it's not yet on actual bookstore shelves. Any day now, I'm sure.

  • Just got the word that The Trouble With Unity has arrived at the warehouse. (Guess it's too late to change the body-text font to Zapf Dingbats.) Am told that copies ordered from Oxford will arrive sooner than those from Amazon or elsewhere.

  • Whitman John Seery edited what will be a terrific book.
Just received the page proofs for my article, "Mestiza Poetics: Walt Whitman, Barack Obama, and the Question of Union." Very exciting! Due out in December and published by University Press of Kentucky, A Political Companion… will be the first full-length exploration of Whitman's poetry through the lens of political theory.
